Making An Action Sports Graphic Novel - Shake The Lake

I'm not a fan of super hero comic books. Don't hate me for saying so but Superman's a poof, Dare Devil is a douche, the X-Men (sans Wolverine) are rediculous and The Hulk is just stupid. I once thought Batman's really the only cool thing about comics. Okay okay calm down. What I meant to say is... I hadn't been a fan growing up and obviously I don't really "get" superhero stories. To me, they're for an older generation. The suspension of disbelief is stretched too far with most of the major comic icons. But even without having been a fan, I can still recognize the magic of experiencing a story through art. There's something undeniably beautiful about graphic novels. 300, Sin City, a host of others really grab my attention.

I like coming of age stories. Stories that reflect my own upbringing, my own desires, wants, needs, triumphs and downfalls. The adolescent pain and excitement of falling in love, the life changing friendships and the eye opening adentures of teenage life. We at North Air Entertainment set out to create a coming of age, realistic graphic novel.
The Shake The Lake screenplay is being packaged and the movie is in development so we decided to bring the story to life in graphic novel form. I'd been searching comic book forums and "must read" lists for weeks, trying to find anything that was action sports related. No wakeboarding, no skateboarding, no motocross or ski comics to be found. Whaaaa? Why not? Boats. Babes. Schenanigans. Who wouldn't want to draw that?
As you'll see, there are a lot of people who want to draw that. In fact they'll draw anything you want them too as long as you're paying. Correction, they'll draw whatever you want... for about 3 weeks. Then, they'll take your money and fall off the face of the earth having delivered a shred of what was agreed upon.

Well, after a long search and a few hundred dollars spread out here and there on sample artists and sample work, we've found a team of incredible illustrators who are chugging away on a 143 page, 5 volume graphic novel of Shake The Lake. Now the question is, "Does anyone want to read it?" I guess we'll find out.
What do we have going for us? 1. We work and play in the action sports industry. We've shot surfing films, sponsor pro and am wakeboarders, have connections with a large portion of the industry and can get in touch with a large wakeboarding and action sports fan base through Elevated Clothing Company. 2. We're basing the novel off an award winning screenplay. 3. We've got amazing artists working on the illustrations. 4. The project is being guided and watched over by some long standing Marvel and DC industry pros.

We're looking at a year-and-some-long process so check back bi-weekly for an education in comic book production. I'll update pics and share process. For now, check out the world's first sneak peek at Shake The Lake and how we're attempting to make the list of one of the best graphic novels.
